The Bridge Youth Leadership Training, February, 2013

The Bridge Youth Leadership Training, February, 2013

Statistics has shown that a large chunk of Nigerian youths are very talented and full of potentials but such talents are unfortunately wasted. These potentials can be channeled towards individual and national development. Lack of competencies, entrepreneurial skills and disconnection from societal and economic mainstreams have negated young people from living meaningful and productive lives.

This era is an era in which there is a rising search for 21st century empathetic leadership and governance to mitigate our challenges and transform Nigeria into a world class nation. The potential contributions of young people in Nigeria is compromised by a host of challenges including but not limited to high vulnerability to poverty, low value orientation, restiveness, increasing level of drug addiction and usage, general breakdown in moral values and norms. It is no wonder that there is a rising and growing re-engaging and activism among youth with government for better governance.

The affirmative is that there is a rising civic consciousness among our teeming youth, the prevailing opportunity is in empowering the youth with the requisite 21st century skills and knowledge that can make our engagement and activism effective and impactful. There is indeed a rising critical mass of youth, positive change is imminent, the tipping point looks not from afar but within the horizon, persons of determination can tilt the balance but it takes persons of imagination and skill to nurture transformation.

Youth Leadership Academy intends to bring together 30 youth to Otukpo, Benue State, Nigeria for 2 days training to deepen their leadership, entrepreneurship and democracy knowledge and foster active youth participation in good governance processes and democracy building within the region. After the training, within 6 weeks, each participant is mandated to conduct a passing-it-on (PiO) exercise, which implies doing a mini training to share what they have learnt with at least 15 youth in their community.

While the organizers will take care of feeding and course materials, other expenses like accommodation and logistics are at participants’ cost.
